Privacy Policy

Rarestone is an iPhone app made by Sidequest Labs ("we", "us"). It identifies rocks, minerals and crystals from your camera. This policy explains what the app collects, why, and the choices you have.
Your account
You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive a user ID and, depending on what you allow, your email address (Apple may give us a private relay address instead). We use this to keep your finds tied to your account and to contact you about your account if needed.
Identifying a rock
When you tap a rock, the app sends a cropped image of that rock to our server, which asks Google's Gemini AI model to identify it. The result is sent back to your phone. The finds you save appear in My Finds and are stored with your account.
"Share my rock photos" (optional, off by default)
If you turn this on, we keep photos from your scans to train and improve Rarestone's identification. For each rock you tap this can include the still image at the moment you tapped, a few frames from the seconds before, the close-up crop, and, if you choose to record it, a short series of frames of you picking up and turning the rock over. Before anything leaves your phone:
- faces are blurred on your device, and photos where people fill much of the frame are discarded;
- each image is re-saved without its original metadata (EXIF), including GPS coordinates;
- no audio is ever recorded.
These photos upload only on Wi-Fi. You can turn this setting off at any time; photos already shared are removed when you delete your account.
Location (optional, off by default)
If you allow it, we store the approximate area of a find: the nearest town and a location rounded to about 10 km. We never store your precise location.
Who we share data with
We use a small number of service providers to run Rarestone, and they only process data on our behalf:
- Supabase hosts our database, file storage and server functions;
- Google (Gemini API) analyzes the rock image you tap to identify it;
- Apple and Google handle sign-in.
We don't sell your personal information and we don't show ads.
How long we keep data
We keep your account and finds until you delete them. When you delete your account in Settings, we delete your account, your saved finds and any photos you shared.
Your choices
- Turn "Share my rock photos" or location on or off in the app at any time.
- Delete your account and data from Settings → Delete account.
- Email support@rarestone.app to ask what data we hold about you or to have it corrected or deleted.
Children
Rarestone is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
